Mohini Dongre, a dietician at Narayana Hospital Gurugram, adds that the high potassium content in coconut water can help regulate blood pressure, potentially lowering the risk of cardiovascular problems. Parmeet Kaur, chief nutritionist at Marengo Asia Hospital Gurugram, emphasizes that the effect of coconut water on blood sugar depends on how much is consumed and the individual’s health status. Coconut water contains natural sugars-fructose and glucose-with a typical cup (240 ml) containing about 6-7 grams of sugar. Importantly, it has a low glycemic index (GI), meaning it raises blood sugar more gradually compared to high-GI foods.

Dr. Kaur advises that people with diabetes can include coconut water in their diet, but portion control is key. Overindulgence can lead to a more noticeable rise in blood glucose levels.
