As World Liver Day approaches on April 19, medical experts are sounding the alarm on the detrimental effects of excessive sugar and oil consumption on liver health, emphasizing the need for vigilance and regular check-ups to prevent fatty liver diseases.
Traditionally associated with alcohol-related liver diseases, liver health is increasingly threatened by the consumption of high-calorie foods, particularly those rich in sugars and fats. Dr. Shreevidya, Medical Director at Apollo ProHealth, underscored the rising concern over non-alcoholic liver disease, cautioning that it can lead to severe complications akin to alcoholic liver disease, such as liver cirrhosis, potentially necessitating liver transplantation.
Dr. Pavan Dhoble, Junior Consultant in Gastroenterology at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC, elucidated how excess sugar and oil intake contribute to liver injury, likening their effects to those of alcohol consumption. The accumulation of fat droplets in liver tissue due to high-calorie diets can trigger inflammation, ultimately leading to liver failure.
The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is on the rise in India, with nearly one out of every four adults at risk due to overweight or obesity. Additionally, alcohol use is also increasing, further exacerbating the situation.
A study conducted by AIIMS revealed that over one-third of Indians suffer from fatty liver or NAFLD, with
this phenomenon affecting approximately 35 percent of children as well. Dr. Rahul Roy, Consultant in Liver Transplant and Hepatopancreatic Biliary Surgery, highlighted the critical nature of liver diseases in India’s public health landscape. He emphasized that NAFLD often goes unrecognized in its early stages, underscoring the importance of addressing lifestyle-related health issues from an early age.
Dr. Roy attributed the rise in fatty liver diseases to the westernization of diets, characterized by increased consumption of fast food and a lack of fruits and vegetables. As such, promoting healthier dietary habits and lifestyle choices becomes paramount in safeguarding liver health and preventing the onset of potentially life-threatening conditions.
As the theme for this year’s World Liver Day urges individuals to “Be vigilant, get regular liver check-ups, and prevent fatty liver diseases,” the medical community emphasizes the crucial role of proactive measures in maintaining liver health and overall well-being.
