Doctors across Tamil Nadu are raising concerns over the increasing rates of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), especially among Indian youth. Leading gastroenterologists from Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, and Lily Mission Hospital, Madurai, have highlighted the pressing need for early detection and lifestyle changes to manage and prevent this chronic digestive disorder.

According to Dr E. Rabindranath and Dr Jacob Raja A S of Naruvi Hospitals, persistent symptoms such as acid reflux, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing often progress to chronic GERD, which can disrupt sleep, productivity, and overall quality of life. GERD now affects roughly one in five people worldwide—an alarming statistic that mirrors the upward trend seen in India’s younger population. This rise is being attributed to unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, increased consumption of processed foods, and stress.

Dr Jacob explained that GERD is caused by a malfunction of the esophageal sphincter—a valve that normally prevents stomach acid from washing back into the esophagus. When this fails, it leads to symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and chest discomfort.

“GERD symptoms can mimic those of heart conditions or anxiety, making timely consultation with a medical expert essential to avoid misdiagnosis,” Dr Rabindranath cautioned.

Both doctors unanimously urge the public to prioritize:

  • Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol

  • Avoiding spicy, fatty, and processed foods

  • Managing stress through exercise or relaxation techniques

  • Portion control and regular meal timings

Additional tips for reducing nighttime reflux include elevating the head while sleeping, keeping at least a 3–4 hour gap between dinner and bedtime, sleeping on the left side, and wearing loose clothes during workouts.

Dr A C Arun from Lily Mission Hospital stressed the importance of prompt medical evaluation if symptoms persist, as untreated GERD can lead to severe complications such as esophageal ulcers, strictures, Barrett’s esophagus, or even cancer. He pointed out that endoscopy remains a crucial tool for detecting these serious issues early on, allowing for timely intervention.

“The sooner GERD is diagnosed—whether with medications, minor surgical options, or endoscopic procedures—the better the outcome for halting disease progression,” he said.
