New Delhi: The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) in New Delhi has initiated an indefinite strike in response to a brutal assault on a resident doctor. The incident, which took place on the night of August 12, involved a mob of patient’s relatives who allegedly attacked the doctor from the surgery department. The attack occurred after a patient, who was critically injured in a road accident, collapsed while being taken for an X-ray.
According to reports, the patient’s attendant summoned a mob that entered the hospital and assaulted the surgery resident. The violence resulted in injuries to several security guards, while resident doctors and Chief Medical Officers reportedly sought safety by locking themselves in a room and removing their white coats.
Dr. Sarada Prasad Sahoo, President of RDA, LHMC, has confirmed that all elective services have been suspended. The strike will continue until their demands are met, which include:
- Registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the attackers.
- Increased security personnel in vulnerable areas such as the casualty and emergency departments.
- A restriction on the number of attendants allowed per patient.
While elective services are suspended, the RDA has committed to maintaining emergency services to ensure critical patient care is not compromised. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has also voiced its support for the strike.
