On National Doctors Day, observed annually on July 1, health experts highlighted the pressing issue of burnout among doctors, emphasizing the necessity for clear work-life boundaries to maintain their well-being. The day serves both to appreciate the efforts of doctors and to raise awareness about the challenges they face.

“Work pressure can easily intrude on personal time, leading to early burnout, especially in the medical profession,” said Dr. Meenakshi Jain, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, in an interview with IANS. “Doctors should recognize this and strive to set clear boundaries between work and personal life.”

Dr. Jain pointed out that doctors’ demanding work hours, the need for high cognitive performance, and frequently changing schedules contribute significantly to their stress levels. She advised that taking breaks when possible and improving communication with team members could enhance work efficiency without adding extra stress. “Setting healthy boundaries is crucial,” she added.

Dr. Tushar Tayal, Lead Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, echoed these sentiments. “As doctors, we often prioritize patients’ health over our own. Long and erratic work schedules, coupled with the responsibility of others’ lives, are taxing. We must prioritize our health first,” he stated.

The experts stressed that achieving a work-life balance is essential for doctors. A healthy and regular sleep-wake cycle is paramount, and maintaining a regular schedule, avoiding skipping meals, and engaging in daily exercise or brisk walking for 30 minutes were recommended for good physical and mental health. Developing hobbies was also suggested as a beneficial practice.

Dr. Jain also emphasized the importance of emotional wellness for doctors. “Medical professionals touch the lives of many people and often burden themselves with negative memories. Emotional expression is essential for building resilience and maintaining well-being,” she explained.

In addition to recommending yoga and meditation, the experts advised doctors to communicate with their team members, join peer support groups, and not hesitate to utilize psychological services if necessary. “Doctors often underestimate their symptoms and do not seek help due to work pressure and other reasons. Regular physical and mental health checkups are essential for all medical professionals,” Dr. Jain concluded.

As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, ensuring that doctors have the necessary support and strategies to manage their stress and maintain their health is more important than ever. National Doctors Day serves as a reminder of the critical role doctors play in society and the need to support them in their demanding profession.
