New Delhi, May 11, 2025:
As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, members of the medical fraternity are urging the government to postpone key postgraduate medical entrance exams, including the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) and the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI CET). The calls for postponement come amid growing concerns over candidate safety, transportation disruptions, and psychological stress caused by the ongoing conflict.

Growing Concerns Among Medical Aspirants

The NEET PG 2025 is currently scheduled for June 15, 2025, while the AIIMS INICET 2025 is set for May 17, and the INISS July 2025 session for May 24. However, doctors and student leaders argue that the current situation makes it unsafe and impractical to conduct these exams as planned.

Dr. Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of the Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors’ Network (IMA-JDN), highlighted the risks in a recent social media post. He pointed out that several major events, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Chartered Accountancy (CA) exam, have already been cancelled due to security concerns. “It’s high time the Government should cancel the major examinations like NEET PG and INICET as there are various states with flights cancelled and security threat on head which is affecting their mental peace as well as academics,” Dr. Chauhan wrote.

Disrupted Travel and Security Risks

Doctors note that states such as Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Delhi are experiencing heightened security measures, including blackouts, sirens, and missile alerts. Travel restrictions have led to the cancellation of dozens of flights, making it difficult for candidates to reach exam centers. In some areas, government advisories prohibit movement outside, further complicating logistics.

Dr. Lakshya Mittal, National President of United Doctors Front (UDF), has formally requested the Director of AIIMS Delhi to postpone the upcoming INI-CET PG and INI-SS exams. In his letter, Dr. Mittal cited “grave challenges” faced by candidates, including security threats, psychological distress, and disruptions to transport and communication networks. “Many regions near the border and sensitive zones are already under curfew or restricted movement orders, making it unsafe and nearly impossible for candidates to commute to the exam centers,” he wrote.

Calls for Compassion and Fairness

The medical community emphasizes that holding national exams during this period could overburden already strained infrastructure and place additional stress on students and their families. Dr. Mittal urged authorities to “consider postponing these exams to a more stable and secure date,” adding that such a move would demonstrate compassion and prioritization of student welfare.

On social media, other doctors echoed these concerns, stressing the need for the government to weigh the pros and cons, including the impact on academic calendars and the broader medical education system.

Government Response Awaited

As of now, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) and AIIMS have not issued any official statement regarding the postponement of the exams. Students and medical professionals alike are hoping for a swift resolution to the conflict and minimal disruption to the academic schedule.
