Lucknow, April 22, 2025 — A significant legal challenge has been initiated against the eligibility criteria mandated for faculty recruitment at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences. A doctor has filed a petition in the High Court contesting the compulsory requirement of the BCMET (Basic Course in Medical Education Technology) certification for faculty appointments, arguing that this criterion is unfair and restrictive.

The challenge comes amid broader concerns raised by medical professionals regarding faculty recruitment norms across medical colleges in India. The United Doctors’ Front (UDF) has recently exposed multiple violations in faculty appointments, including wrongful consideration of PhD tenure as teaching experience and the appointment of part-time PhD holders as faculty, which contravenes University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations.

The UDF highlighted that many faculty members have been appointed or promoted without fulfilling mandatory experience requirements, such as the stipulated four years as Assistant Professor for MD/MS degree holders before promotion. The association also raised alarms about the appointment of MSc and PhD holders in non-medical subjects to faculty positions in MBBS education, which they argue compromises the quality of medical education due to lack of clinical expertise.

The NMC’s recent exemption of faculty appointed before February 14, 2022, from scrutiny has further fueled allegations of systemic irregularities and corruption in medical faculty recruitment. The UDF has demanded a comprehensive audit of faculty appointments over the last 15 years, strict enforcement of eligibility criteria, and legal action against institutions violating norms.

The doctor’s High Court petition against the BCMET compulsion adds to the ongoing discourse on medical faculty recruitment standards, emphasizing the need for transparent, merit-based, and regulation-compliant appointments to safeguard the integrity of medical education.
