India’s healthcare landscape is on the brink of a transformative overhaul, driven by the widespread adoption of digital technologies such as robotics, telehealth, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to a report unveiled on Monday.
The comprehensive study by Deloitte underscores the pivotal role of digital and technological innovations, alongside infrastructure advancements and strategic government and private initiatives, in reshaping the country’s healthcare sector.
Highlighting a collaborative approach between the government and private entities, the report emphasizes the collective efforts aimed at sculpting the future of healthcare in India. Notable government endeavors, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and e-Sanjeevani, serve as foundational pillars in the establishment of a digitized health ecosystem. Simultaneously, private players have embraced digital technologies like robotics, telehealth, and AI to enhance healthcare delivery.
Moreover, the report showcases a burgeoning adoption of 5G technology by private entities, poised to revolutionize tech-enabled care. The exponential growth in 5G utilization signifies improved access to high-speed connectivity within the healthcare domain, thereby facilitating seamless digital healthcare services.
Joydeep Ghosh, Partner and Industry Leader for Life Sciences & Healthcare at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India, underscored the transformative potential of India’s burgeoning digital economy. With over 75 million 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband subscriptions in 2021, expected to soar to approximately 460 million by 2030, the country is witnessing a paradigm shift towards tech-enabled care.
Ghosh highlighted pioneering projects like ‘Anaemia Mukt Mahilayen’ and ‘Sanjeevani Pariyojana,’ leveraging digital solutions to combat anaemia and provide virtual support for Covid-19, as emblematic of India’s strides in digital healthcare innovation.
However, the report also underscores the imperative of addressing critical challenges such as cybersecurity vulnerabilities, infrastructure gaps, workforce shortages, and digital inequities. As India navigates the digital transformation of its healthcare sector, concerted efforts are needed to mitigate these challenges and ensure equitable access to cutting-edge healthcare services across all segments of society.
