NEW DELHI – India’s digital health landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) reaching a new milestone of over 79.9 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA). This remarkable achievement is facilitating a seamless and secure digital health ecosystem, allowing citizens to easily access and share their health records with healthcare providers.
Key Pillars of a Digital Health Infrastructure
The ABDM’s success is built upon a robust digital infrastructure designed to enhance healthcare delivery and accessibility, particularly in remote and rural areas. This includes the registration of a vast network of over 4.18 lakh health facilities and 6.79 lakh healthcare professionals. The mission’s focus on telemedicine is bridging geographical gaps, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all. The Health Facility Registry (HFR) and the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) are central to this effort, creating a unified directory of healthcare resources.
Prioritizing Privacy and Citizen Empowerment
At the core of the ABDM is a strong commitment to citizen-centricity and data privacy. Health records are shared only with explicit and informed consent from the patient, ensuring individuals retain full control over their personal health data. This approach empowers citizens to manage their health information securely and confidently. The unique ABHA serves as a digital health identity, enabling citizens to safely view and share their medical records, thereby promoting continuity of care across all levels of healthcare.
Progress and Oversight
According to a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, the ABDM has made substantial progress as of August 5, 2025. This includes the creation of 79,91,18,072 ABHA accounts, the registration of 4,18,964 health facilities, and 6,79,692 healthcare professionals. Furthermore, over 67.19 crore health records have already been linked to ABHA accounts. Monitoring of these initiatives is conducted at both the central and state levels to ensure effective implementation and progress.
