Kozhikode, Kerala:
A day after a 42-year-old woman from Valanchery tested positive for the Nipah virus, Kerala’s health authorities have ramped up their response, tracing 58 contacts and initiating a multi-departmental investigation to contain the potential outbreak.

Contact Tracing and Medical Response
Out of the 58 identified contacts, six individuals who exhibited symptoms were hospitalized and have since tested negative for Nipah. Five of these, suffering only mild symptoms, have been moved to an isolation ward at Manjeri Medical College. A staff nurse from Ernakulam was also shifted to the same facility. With these developments, the total number of individuals who have tested negative for the virus has risen to 13.

The infected woman remains in serious condition in the ICU, where doctors have administered monoclonal antibodies as part of her treatment. Among her 51 high-risk contacts, 12 are close relatives, three are staff at the Valanchery family health centre, one works at a local clinic, 25 are from Perinthalmanna hospital, and two are from different laboratories.

Containment and Preventive Measures
District authorities have imposed restrictions across nine wards in four local bodies, declaring them containment zones. Wearing masks in public has been made mandatory. Starting Saturday, health workers will conduct fever surveillance, visiting 4,749 households over four days to monitor for potential cases.

In a related development, the Animal Husbandry Department will send samples from a cat that recently died in the woman’s neighbourhood to a lab in Bhopal to test for Nipah antibodies, as part of efforts to trace the source of the infection.

Government and Community Response
Health Minister Veena George has ordered a joint outbreak investigation involving multiple departments. She expressed optimism, stating, “Experts believe there’s a better chance of finding the source of infection in this case.”

While the government’s ongoing ‘Ente Keralam’ programme will continue under strict restrictions, all associated cultural programmes have been cancelled as a precaution. The district administration has been instructed to take action under the Disaster Management Act and Public Health Act against anyone withholding information from health authorities.

Minister George also highlighted the vigilance of the medical team, noting that the doctor who examined the patient suspected Nipah after reviewing her MRI scan and promptly ordered diagnostic testing.

Looking Ahead
With containment zones in place, increased surveillance, and a coordinated investigation, Kerala is taking proactive steps to prevent the further spread of Nipah. The situation remains under close watch as authorities work to identify the source and limit transmission.
