Bangladesh is currently facing a severe dengue outbreak that has overwhelmed its healthcare system, with cases and deaths rising sharply in recent months. Official data reports 24,183 dengue infections and 101 deaths so far this year, with August alone accounting for 19 deaths after 41 fatalities in July. Health experts warn that without immediate and robust interventions, the situation could deteriorate further as the virus remains widespread across the country.

Experts attribute this surge to climatic conditions that favor mosquito breeding, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The increased rainfall and temperature shifts linked to climate change have created perfect environments for Aedes mosquitoes, the primary dengue vectors, to multiply rapidly.

Kabirul Bashar from Jahangirnagar University emphasized the critical nature of the outbreak, noting hospitals are already facing overwhelming demand. Authorities and health experts advocate for comprehensive measures including community participation in eliminating stagnant water sources, use of mosquito repellents and nets, and government-led vector control initiatives.

Dhaka city remains the hardest hit region, accounting for a significant proportion of cases due to its high population density. The outbreak reflects a continuing trend of rising dengue incidence in Bangladesh over recent years, with 2022 marking the deadliest year nationally in over two decades.

This escalating dengue threat underscores the urgent need for coordinated public health responses combining education, prevention, and clinical care to avert one of the most severe outbreaks in Bangladesh’s history.
