New Delhi, June 23, 2025 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has criticized previous administrations for neglecting the infrastructure at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), one of the capital’s most prestigious medical institutions. Recent high-level reviews have exposed alarming deficiencies in security and accommodation for both students and doctors, raising urgent concerns about the safety and well-being of those associated with the college.
A review meeting chaired by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, alongside Chief Minister Gupta and Health Minister Pankaj Singh, assessed conditions at MAMC and other major hospitals in the city. Officials found severe overcrowding in hostels, with seven to eight students forced to share a single room and only one almirah for their belongings. The civil infrastructure was described as being “in shambles,” with significant space shortages due to encroachments.
Chief Minister Gupta expressed shock at the state of the institution, highlighting reports of serious incidents, including cases of sexual assault. “I am worried about the students. I learnt that seven to eight students are living in a hostel room and have to share one almirah,” Gupta said. She further noted the unsafe environment and pledged immediate action, including the repair of existing facilities and the construction of new hostels. Gupta vowed to personally oversee these changes to ensure a safe and adequate environment for students and staff.
The meeting also identified lapses in security and an acute shortage of accommodation as pressing issues that require urgent attention. Officials emphasized the need for swift action to address these infrastructure gaps, which have long been ignored by previous governments.
