A 23-year-old woman, believed to be homeless, died during treatment at Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital on Wednesday, days after she was allegedly molested by another patient at Jag Pravesh Chandra (JPC) Hospital in northeast Delhi. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns over patient safety and hospital security in the capital.
Incident Details
According to police reports, the woman was found unconscious in Sonia Vihar on June 21 and was brought to JPC Hospital by Delhi Police for treatment. On June 23, while she stepped out of her ward, she was allegedly molested by another patient. The accused, a 23-year-old man, was arrested and booked for assault following a complaint at the New Usmanpur police station.
After the incident, the woman was referred to GTB Hospital for specialized care. She died during treatment on June 25. Police stated that there were no visible external injuries at the time of her medical examination, and further action will depend on the results of the post-mortem report.
Official and Political Reactions
The Delhi government, citing a medical examination, stated that no evidence of sexual assault was found on the woman. The body has been preserved for autopsy, and a committee of senior doctors and officers has been formed to investigate the case. CCTV footage from the hospital has been handed over to police for review.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who have questioned the adequacy of hospital security measures and demanded accountability from the city administration. AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj and Delhi Congress president Devendra Yadav both called for swift action and highlighted the need for improved safety protocols in state-run hospitals.
Ongoing Investigation
Police and hospital authorities are continuing their investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing staff. The final determination of the cause of death and any possible criminal liability will depend on the findings of the post-mortem and the ongoing inquiry.
“On the basis of the committee findings and CCTV footage, the details of the on-duty nursing officer, sanitation staff and security guard were shared with the investigation officer of Delhi Police on June 25, and further investigation is being carried out,” the Delhi government stated.
