New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a major month-long cleanliness campaign, titled “Delhi’s Freedom from Garbage Cleanliness Drive,” scheduled to run from August 1 to August 31, in commemoration of India’s Independence anniversary.
The campaign aims to mobilise extensive citizen participation and strong inter-departmental coordination across Delhi. According to a government statement, all departments—including the Urban Development Department, PWD, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, NDMC, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, and others—will contribute towards making the city cleaner and more hygienic.
A key planning meeting will be held on July 29 at the Civic Centre, bringing together ministers, MPs, councillors, and association representatives to finalise roles and responsibilities to ensure smooth execution of the initiative.
The drive promises widespread engagement from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, students from schools and colleges, and other community institutions. A dedicated online portal will be launched, enabling residents to upload ‘before and after’ photos of cleaned spaces, thus promoting visible community participation and recognition.
“August is celebrated as the month of India’s Independence, and the government has resolved that this August, Delhi will achieve ‘freedom from garbage’,” said Chief Minister Gupta at a high-level meeting. The campaign will specifically target schools, government offices, hospitals, long-accumulated waste, and unused items in storerooms—along with vegetable and fruit markets, industrial areas, bus terminals, and depots.
Officials confirmed that special cleanliness programmes will be organized every Saturday and Sunday in August to maintain momentum, with wide publicity given across multiple communication channels. Additional efforts will focus on slum clusters, unauthorised colonies, and informal settlements with an aim to collect and dispose of higher-than-usual volumes of waste.
Urban Development and Education Minister Ashish Sood remarked that the drive will send a strong national message about Delhi’s commitment to cleanliness, especially by involving school and college students in creating awareness citywide. There are also plans to recognise and reward citizens who actively participate and share their contributions via the official portal.
Chief Minister Gupta emphasised, “Cleanliness is not merely a government initiative but a civic duty.” She appealed to all Delhiites to take active responsibility, linking the campaign to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a cleaner India where every citizen plays a part.
