New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) – In a significant move aimed at bolstering public health, the Delhi government has announced plans to establish dedicated adult vaccination clinics within its public hospitals. Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized the crucial role of adult vaccination in preventive healthcare and community well-being during the inauguration of an adult vaccination clinic at Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, on Friday.
“Preventive healthcare is the need of the hour, and vaccination plays a vital role in safeguarding public health,” stated Minister Singh. He further elaborated on the government’s intentions, saying, “We plan to implement a similar step in Delhi government hospitals. This initiative will ensure easy access to essential vaccines, helping protect individuals and improve overall public health outcomes.”
The newly inaugurated clinic at Fortis Hospital is designed to provide a comprehensive range of adult immunization services, focusing particularly on preventive care for adults and the elderly. The clinic will offer vaccinations against a variety of diseases, including Influenza, Hepatitis A & B, Pneumococcal, Typhoid, and Herpes/Shingles.
Dr. R.S. Mishra, Principal Director, Internal Medicine at Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, highlighted the importance of adult vaccination, stating, “Vaccination is an essential pillar of preventive healthcare. While childhood immunisation is widely recognised, adult vaccination is often overlooked, despite its crucial role in preventing serious illnesses. These vaccinations will provide protection against common vaccine-preventable diseases and offer preventive care for adults to reduce morbidity and mortality.”
This initiative comes shortly after the Delhi government’s announcement of plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Central government on April 10 to extend the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) to city residents. The government aims to enroll one lakh residents under the AB-PMJAY insurance scheme within a month, offering insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh, which includes provisions for treatment in private hospitals.
