A recent study has alarmingly revealed that adults living in Delhi inhale twice as many microplastics during the summer months compared to winter. This disturbing find spotlights the critical and often overlooked issue of microplastic pollution in the air, raising fresh concerns about urban health risks in one of India’s most polluted cities.
Microplastics, tiny plastic particles less than five millimeters in size, have become ubiquitous contaminants. While much attention has been focused on their presence in oceans and water bodies, the air we breathe has emerged as a significant exposure route. The study, conducted by experts tracking microplastic concentrations in Delhi’s atmosphere, highlights seasonal variations impacting exposure levels.
Researchers found that elevated temperatures, dry conditions, and increased urban activities in summer contribute to the higher airborne microplastic concentrations. During winter, cooler and more humid conditions, along with different atmospheric dynamics, appear to reduce the amount of these particles suspended in the air. The study involved measuring microplastic particles inhaled by adults during different seasons, revealing that summer exposure is approximately double that of winter.
The implications for public health are profound. Inhalation of microplastics can potentially cause respiratory issues, trigger allergies, and lead to other long-term health complications. Delhi, already grappling with severe air pollution challenges, now faces an additional threat from this emerging pollutant. Experts emphasize the urgent need for policies targeting microplastic pollution sources and mitigation measures to safeguard public health.
This study serves as a wake-up call to city planners, health officials, and residents about the compounded risks posed by airborne microplastics. Efforts to reduce plastic waste, improve air filtration, and monitor environmental contaminants must be intensified to address this silent threat.
