The recent Diwali festival in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has seen over 125 people injured due to the hazardous use of homemade “carbide guns,” with many victims, especially children, facing permanent blindness. These dangerous devices, made from plastic or tin pipes filled with calcium carbide and gunpowder, produce a powerful explosion that can cause severe facial burns and devastating eye injuries. The Chief Medical Health Officer of Bhopal, Dr. Manish Sharma, warned that these carbide guns are extremely dangerous and continue to pose a threat as injured patients remain under treatment in multiple hospitals including AIIMS Bhopal, Hamidia Hospital, JP Hospital, and Seva Sadan Hospital.

Carbide guns explode when calcium carbide reacts with water to release highly flammable acetylene gas, which detonates upon ignition. The plastic fragments ejected during the blast act like shrapnel causing penetrating injuries, often targeting vulnerable parts like the eyes and face. Several children aged between 8 and 14 were hospitalized with severe ocular and skin burns, with at least 14 reported cases of permanent loss of eyesight. Doctors confirm that many of these injuries require complex surgical interventions, including ocular surface reconstruction and treatment for limbal stem cell deficiency, a serious condition that causes corneal blindness and long-term visual impairment.

Ophthalmologists not involved in the incident, such as Dr. Aditi Dubey from a Bhopal hospital, highlight the neurological risks of acetylene gas inhalation including brain inflammation and cognitive decline. Experts emphasize that the visual damage from calcium carbide-related ocular burns occurs owing to chemical and thermal injury to the eye’s surface, often leading to chronic complications like symblepharon, dry eye, and persistent epithelial defects. Advanced studies from institutions like the L V Prasad Eye Institute show that these injuries, particularly severe burns, often necessitate multiple surgeries with only partial restoration of vision, underscoring the grave socio-economic and psychological impact on young victims.

The rise in carbide gun injuries this Diwali is partly attributed to a ban on conventional firecrackers due to pollution concerns, leading to increased popularity of these crude, locally made explosive devices often promoted through social media tutorials. While the government’s prior warnings against carbide guns were issued, enforcement has been reportedly lax, leading to outcry from families demanding an immediate ban, strict penalties for manufacturers, and compensation for the affected.

From a public health perspective, these injuries represent a preventable epidemic linked to unsafe recreational practices and unregulated hazardous materials. Prevention campaigns focused on raising awareness of the dangers of carbide guns and promoting safer alternatives for celebrations are urgently needed alongside policy enforcement. Medical guidelines for rapid treatment and rehabilitation of ocular burns must be strengthened to improve visual outcomes and quality of life for survivors.

While most patients are currently stable, the permanent blindness suffered by many children highlights the irreversible damage caused by carbide guns. Medical experts warn that even with early intervention, the prognosis remains guarded, and the burden on healthcare systems is substantial. As the community grapples with the aftermath, the tragedy serves as a stark warning of the hidden dangers behind seemingly innocuous festive trends.
