PRAGUE – The Czech Republic is grappling with its most severe hepatitis A outbreak in over a decade and a half, with cases soaring to unprecedented levels. According to the National Institute of Public Health (SZU), from January to July 2025, there have been 1,053 confirmed cases, a sharp increase from the 636 cases reported throughout the entirety of 2024.

This significant rise in infections is concentrated in three key regions: Prague, the Central Bohemian Region, and the Moravian-Silesian Region. Health officials are urging the public to take preventative measures as the highly contagious liver infection spreads.

Hepatitis A, caused by the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), is typically transmitted through the ingestion of food or water contaminated with fecal matter. While the disease rarely becomes chronic, it can lead to severe illness and, in some rare instances, acute liver failure. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified several risk factors, including poor sanitation, unsafe water, close contact with an infected person, recreational drug use, and unprotected sexual activity.

Experts emphasize that vaccination is the most effective preventive measure, particularly for individuals traveling to areas with a high prevalence of the disease.
