Nagpur, June 7, 2025 — Amid a recent uptick in Covid-19 cases across India, Dr. Shashank Joshi, Padma Shri awardee and former chief of the Maharashtra Covid-19 Task Force, has reassured the public that the present variant is mild and not a reason for alarm. Speaking at the 12th edition of Hello Diabetes Academia (HDA) in Nagpur, Dr. Joshi characterized the current Covid-19 strain as a “seasonal wave” resulting from climate change and minor viral mutations.
“This variant is the great-grandchild of the Omicron strain — mild, self-limiting, and largely harmless for the general public,” Dr. Joshi explained, likening its behavior to other seasonal respiratory infections common during monsoon transitions. He emphasized that healthy individuals may contract the virus but are expected to recover due to existing natural immunity. “Hospitalisations are not rising, there is no oxygen requirement, and deaths only occur in case of patients with extreme comorbidities or severely compromised immunity,” Dr. Joshi added1.
While urging people not to ignore symptoms of seasonal flu, cold, or cough, Dr. Joshi advised proper medical attention for such illnesses. He also clarified that if someone tests positive for Covid-19, wearing a mask is a responsible measure, but home isolation is generally unnecessary as most cases resolve on their own. The healthcare system, he noted, remains robust and well-prepared, with the medical community unconcerned about the current situation1.
Dr. Joshi attributed the rise in respiratory infections to climate change, noting that Covid-19 is just one among several such illnesses and should not provoke extraordinary concern. He highlighted that widespread vaccination and prior exposure have helped build strong immunity across the country1.
During the conference, Dr. Joshi also addressed the growing prevalence of diabetes and obesity, emphasizing visceral fat as a significant health risk among Indians. He warned that women with a waist size above 80 cm and men above 90 cm face a higher risk for diabetes. The three-day scientific event has drawn over 100 experts from across India to discuss advancements in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic care1.
“There is no reason to panic,” Dr. Joshi reiterated. “Our country has built strong immunity through vaccination and prior exposure. The medical fraternity is not worried and the healthcare system remains robust and well-prepared”1.
