Thiruvananthapuram, April 25: Addressing the critical issue of malnutrition and “hidden hunger,” the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST)1 inaugurated a pilot plant for fortified rice kernels (FRK) at its campus here on Friday, April 25th.
This significant initiative aims to enhance nutrition security, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women, by producing rice enriched with essential vitamins and minerals. The plant utilizes innovative, in-house technology developed by CSIR-NIIST scientists.
Dr. Krishna M Ella, Chairperson of Bharat Biotech International, formally inaugurated the facility. He praised the institute’s efforts, stating, “This pilot plant is an important innovation that merges science with social responsibility. It holds promise for improving public health outcomes across the country, particularly in underserved regions.”
The technology behind the FRK involves blending rice flour with vital micronutrients and extruding the mixture into rice-shaped kernels that closely mimic natural rice grains. These fortified kernels are designed to be seamlessly mixed with regular rice supplies distributed through public systems, significantly boosting the nutritional value of meals consumed by millions across India.
The newly launched pilot plant features advanced drying and cooling conveyors for efficient production and has a capacity to produce between 30 to 50 kg of fortified kernels per hour.
Dr. C Anandharamakrishnan, Director of CSIR-NIIST, highlighted that the facility will serve multiple purposes beyond production. “This unit is not just for production; it will also support training, product development, and innovation for start-ups, food safety professionals, and students,” he explained. He stressed that the project reflects CSIR-NIIST’s dedication to developing socially impactful technologies and fostering entrepreneurship within the food and health science sectors.
The establishment of this fortified rice plant is expected to play a vital role in supporting India’s ongoing mission to eliminate malnutrition and enhance food-based nutrition strategies nationwide.
