New Delhi, May 26:
India is witnessing a gradual uptick in Covid-19 cases, but health authorities have assured the public that the situation remains under control. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), addressed concerns on Monday, emphasizing that most infections are mild and there is currently no cause for alarm.

“There is an increase in the number of infections. And we are keeping a close eye on it. However, the percentage of severe cases remains generally low, so there is nothing to worry about,” Dr. Bahl told reporters.

Current Covid-19 Situation

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India currently has 1,009 active Covid-19 cases. Kerala leads with 430 cases, followed by Maharashtra (209) and Delhi (104). Seven deaths have been reported so far: four in Maharashtra, two in Kerala, and one in Karnataka.

The recent rise in cases has been attributed to new subvariants of the virus. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) identified the NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 strains—both descendants of the JN.1 variant—as the primary drivers of the surge. While these subvariants can evade immunity from prior infection or vaccination, Dr. Bahl noted that their impact appears less severe than previous variants such as Omicron.

“The seriousness of the situation depends on how quickly the cases rise, and right now, the trajectory doesn’t seem steep,” he added, pointing out that the current rate of transmission is slower compared to earlier waves.

Government Response and Preparedness

The central government is taking proactive measures to ensure readiness. Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava recently chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials from ICMR and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reassured residents that there is “no panic situation.” She confirmed that guidelines have been issued to all hospitals, and surveillance is being intensified.

Last week, the Delhi government released a comprehensive advisory directing hospitals to ensure the availability of beds, oxygen supply, essential drugs, and vaccines. The advisory also mandated genome sequencing of all positive samples at Lok Nayak Hospital to monitor for possible mutations.

“All health institutions must ensure the functional status of ventilators, Bi-PAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and PSA plants,” the advisory stated.

Public Cooperation Urged

While authorities urge the public to remain calm, they have called for increased vigilance and cooperation to be prepared for any sudden spike in cases.
