Mumbai, May 21: Covid-19 cases are once again on the rise in India, with 257 active cases currently reported, mainly from Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. This uptick comes amid a broader regional surge across Asia, affecting cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore, where health authorities have urged the public to take booster doses as a precaution.

According to Singapore’s health ministry, the increase in cases may be attributed to waning immunity in the population. However, there is no evidence that the current variants are more dangerous or transmissible than previous ones.

In India, Maharashtra has seen a notable jump in cases, rising from 12 to 56 within a week. Health officials emphasize that most cases remain mild, with no unusual severity or mortality reported so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation with increased vigilance to ensure early detection and response to any changes.

The JN.1 Variant and Related Strains

The recent rise in infections has been linked to the JN.1 strain, a sub-variant of Omicron’s BA.2.86 lineage. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a “variant of interest,” noting that the global public health risk remains low at this time. In addition, newer related strains such as LF.7 and NB.1.8 are spreading rapidly in countries like Singapore and Hong Kong, contributing to the current surge.

Symptoms and Severity

Those infected with the JN.1 strain typically experience mild upper respiratory symptoms. Common signs include:

  • Fever

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue and muscle weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea

  • Minor digestive issues

Symptoms generally subside within four to five days, and most cases do not require hospitalization. Health experts note that, unlike earlier variants that caused severe illness, Omicron and its subvariants—including JN.1—primarily affect the upper respiratory tract, resulting in milder disease for most people.

Public Health Advice

Health authorities continue to recommend the following precautions:

  • Wear masks in crowded or indoor spaces

  • Wash hands regularly with soap or use hand sanitizer

  • Stay home if feeling unwell or displaying symptoms

  • Keep vaccinations up to date, including booster shots if eligible

  • Maintain good ventilation in indoor spaces

  • Avoid unnecessary travel to high-risk areas

While the current situation does not pose a major threat, officials urge the public to remain cautious and informed as the virus continues to circulate.
