New Delhi, June 2, 2025:
Amid a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases across Delhi, a student residing in the Godavari Hostel at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has tested positive for the virus. The development has sparked concern among students and staff, prompting urgent calls for enhanced safety measures on campus.

The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) has swiftly responded, urging the university administration to implement immediate preventive and medical interventions. In a formal letter to the vice-chancellor, the union demanded the establishment of a dedicated COVID Care Centre on campus, as per the Delhi High Court’s 2021 directive. The students also called for increased access to medical supervision, testing facilities, essential supplies, and emergency sanitisation of hostels and other campus areas.

In response, the university administration issued an official advisory on Saturday, May 31, emphasizing the importance of basic precautions. The advisory urged all students and staff to practice frequent handwashing, wear masks during gatherings, and maintain personal hygiene to curb the spread of the virus. It also directed Deans of Schools and Chairpersons of Special Centres to form COVID Monitoring Committees to ensure proper implementation of safety protocols.

The Health Centre and Security Branch have been tasked with actively informing and sensitizing both staff and students. The advisory further instructed that any student, employee, or family member testing positive should immediately report to the concerned hostel warden or the university’s Health Centre.

Following discussions with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the JNUSU released a statement on Sunday, June 1, clarifying the current protocol. The CMO stated that home isolation remains the primary course of action for positive cases at this time, and that a separate isolation facility is not presently required. However, the CMO assured students that the situation is being closely monitored and protocols will be updated as necessary.

The CMO also reiterated the importance of respiratory etiquette, urging the campus community to continue wearing masks, maintaining hygiene, and observing preventive measures during gatherings.
