Kolkata, July 26, 2025: The Special CBI Court in Kolkata has issued a stern rebuke to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to present crucial original documents at the onset of the trial in the high-profile multi-crore financial irregularities case connected to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The proceedings trace back to a complaint by Debal Kumar Ghosh, Special Secretary in the state Health Department, which was registered at Tala Police Station. The allegations involve large-scale manipulations in the tendering process, use of unauthorized contractors bypassing the state Public Works Department, illicit disposal of biomedical waste, and the sale of organs from unidentified bodies sent for autopsy, all allegedly orchestrated under the leadership of former Hospital Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who, along with four co-accused, faces charges of cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.
In July 2024, the court had denied the accused’s requests for discharge and formally framed charges. However, in a notable development, the trial’s commencement was marred when the CBI could not produce the original complaint letter that is pivotal to the prosecution’s case. The CBI counsel informed the court that the document was not in their possession and might be with another court, prompting the magistrate’s sharp criticism of the agency’s conduct and a warning of strict action if such lapses recur.
The court also reprimanded the CBI’s investigating officer, underscoring the seriousness with which procedural lapses will be viewed as the case proceeds.
