A groundbreaking study published in Nature Medicine has revealed that a lifesaving intervention package for women experiencing heavy bleeding during childbirth, known as postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), is not only effective but also highly cost-efficient. The findings offer hope for significantly reducing maternal mortality rates, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
The study is based on the E-MOTIVE trial, one of the largest clinical evaluations of its kind. It involved over 200,000 women across 78 hospitals in four African nations. Researchers reported a remarkable outcome: over 1,000 fewer cases of PPH were recorded compared to standard care methods. This achievement highlights the potential of the E-MOTIVE intervention to transform maternal healthcare globally.
Affordable Implementation
A key component of the intervention is the use of a calibrated blood collection drape to monitor blood loss accurately. Despite its effectiveness, the additional cost of implementing the entire E-MOTIVE package was estimated at just $0.30 per patient. When the drape’s cost was set at approximately $1, the overall expenditure per patient was comparable to traditional care, demonstrating its affordability.

Global Impact
Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality, affecting around 14 million women annually and resulting in approximately 75,000 deaths. Most of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where healthcare resources are often constrained. The E-MOTIVE study’s results underscore the urgency of adopting this intervention worldwide.
The intervention’s impact extends beyond its immediate clinical benefits. Researchers noted that if the cost of the drape were to fall below $1, the economic advantages could surpass those of standard care, making it even more appealing for widespread adoption.
