Kolkata: Despite the arrival of summer and the accompanying intense heat and humidity, Kolkata is still grappling with cases of influenza B, a viral infection typically associated with the monsoon and colder months.

According to Prabhas Prasun Giri, the PICU in-charge at the Institute of Child Health, Kolkata, three children are currently receiving treatment for influenza B in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at ICH, including one on ventilation. Another child is being treated for the same condition at the PICU at Manipal Mukundapur. Giri noted that the persistence of cases despite the summer heat is unusual.

Influenza B is a highly contagious virus that spreads through respiratory droplets. While some individuals may experience mild symptoms resembling the common cold, the virus can cause severe symptoms, particularly in children with developing immune systems and older adults with weakened immunity.

Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri, a microbiologist at Peerless Hospital, reported that they detected nine influenza B cases in March and two this month, primarily in children. He added that the virus typically causes upper respiratory infections and is highly contagious and that even though it is most common during winter and the rainy season, cases are still being reported.

Doctors say that influenza infection can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, cold, body ache, fatigue, and chills. In severe cases, complications like pneumonia, bronchitis, and respiratory failure can occur.

Abhirup Sarkar, the director of Suraksha Diagnostic chain, mentioned that the number of cases detected in their labs has remained consistent over the past few months. Sarkar believes that increased awareness of the need for testing post-COVID-19 could also contribute to the consistent numbers.

While most cases of influenza B exhibit mild symptoms and do not require hospitalization, doctors are concerned about the prolonged duration of symptoms. Unlike the adenovirus outbreak a few years ago, which primarily affected younger children, influenza B is mainly affecting older children. Doctors have identified school-going children as the most vulnerable due to the ease of transmission in school environments. They recommend precautions such as hand hygiene and mask-wearing to prevent infection.

A senior health official stated that the number of cases is not high enough to cause panic, but they are closely monitoring the situation to detect any potential spikes and implement preventive measures.
