Purnea, Bihar – A clash between MBBS students and Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) interns at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Purnea, has sent shockwaves across the medical community after visuals of the incident went viral on social media platforms.
The incident, which took place on the night of January 22, followed months of reported tension between the two groups. Allegations of discrimination and provocation have emerged, with FMG interns accusing MBBS students of persistent harassment.
What Happened?
According to FMG interns, the conflict escalated after a series of discriminatory actions by MBBS students. One FMG intern claimed that juniors circulated a “Do’s and Don’ts” list instructing first-year students not to interact with FMGs.
Adding to the tension was the allocation of UG hostel rooms to FMG interns due to space constraints in the intern building, which reportedly led to accusations from MBBS students that FMGs were “taking over” their space.
The situation reached a boiling point on January 22 when FMGs returning from night duty asked MBBS students to reduce noise in the hostel. A verbal argument ensued, which quickly turned physical.
FMG interns later alleged that their attempts to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful. “As seniors, we hoped raising our voices would calm things down, but it only provoked them further,” said an intern. Intervention by the Head of Department and senior residents eventually brought the altercation to an end.
The Aftermath
The following morning, FMGs submitted a written complaint to the hospital superintendent, requesting immediate action. Frustrated by the administration’s delayed response, they staged a sit-in outside the UG hostel on January 23. However, the protest led to another confrontation with MBBS students, resulting in further physical altercations.
FMGs have since decided not to escalate the matter further but have called on the administration to address systemic discrimination and create a more inclusive environment.
Call for Equal Treatment
The incident has sparked widespread debate online, with the medical community voicing concern over the treatment of FMGs.
Dr. Kaushal, National Media Coordinator of the All FMGs Association (AFA), highlighted the broader challenges faced by FMG interns, stating, “FMGs are Indians, from the same state, working toward the same goal of becoming doctors. They deserve equal respect. Financial and personal circumstances may have led them to pursue medical education abroad, but this does not make them any less deserving of dignity.”
