Cholesterol, long vilified as the primary cause of heart disease, is not a disease itself, according to Dr. Alok Chopra, a seasoned cardiologist and founder-director of Delhi’s Aashlok Hospital. In a recent discussion on “Your Health DeKoded,” Dr. Chopra challenges the widespread misconception that cholesterol is inherently harmful. He explains that this myth has been perpetuated, in part, by pharmaceutical companies benefiting financially from chronic illness treatments.

Cholesterol’s role is more complex and crucial than commonly understood. Approximately 85% of cholesterol is produced naturally by the body and it performs at least 10 vital functions, including contributing to arterial rigidity and damping inflammation during illness. Far from being purely detrimental, cholesterol can act as a protective agent within the body.

Dr. Chopra points out the real problem lies not in cholesterol itself, but in poor dietary and lifestyle habits. Consuming unhealthy foods triggers inflammation, which leads to plaque formation in arteries. Cholesterol then accumulates around these plaques, attempting to “patch up” arterial damage. Ongoing unhealthy eating habits result in increasing arterial blockages, ultimately raising the risk of heart disease and mortality.

The cardiologist offers practical dietary advice to promote heart health: eat two meals daily with the largest meal in the morning, including eggs and green leafy vegetables. Starting the day with a cup of bullet coffee is recommended. Snacks should be light, such as nuts, salads, or soup, avoiding heavy foods between meals. He advises consuming fruits after meals rather than on an empty stomach, due to the way fructose is metabolized by the liver.

Summarizing his recommendations, Dr. Chopra emphasizes: maintaining a consistent eating schedule, eating more vegetables and grains, reducing non-vegetarian food intake, and allowing at least two hours between eating and sleeping for optimal heart health.

This nuanced perspective underscores that cholesterol itself is not the enemy; rather, it is a marker of underlying lifestyle issues that require addressing through balanced nutrition and healthy habits.
