The Odisha Congress has intensified its demand for the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling following a severe cholera outbreak that has swept across the state. The outbreak, which was first detected in the Jajpur district, has now spread to 11 districts, resulting in over 15 reported deaths and affecting more than 12,000 people, according to Congress estimates.

A fact-finding mission led by legislator C S Raazen Ekka from the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) visited the affected regions to assess the situation on the ground. The team reported that the actual number of infections may be significantly higher than official figures suggest, raising concerns about underreporting and the effectiveness of the state’s response.

Congress leaders have sharply criticized the state government, accusing it of failing to provide safe drinking water and adequate medical support to the affected communities. MLA Santosh Singh Saluja specifically targeted Minister Mahaling, alleging that he was preoccupied with other matters while the health crisis escalated, and called for his immediate resignation.

The outbreak has sparked a political outcry, with the Congress party holding the government responsible for what they describe as an inadequate and delayed response to a preventable crisis.

“The government’s failure to ensure clean drinking water has directly contributed to the spread of cholera. The health minister must take responsibility,” said Congress legislator C S Raazen Ekka.

As the situation continues to unfold, public health officials and political leaders remain under pressure to contain the outbreak and address the underlying issues of water safety and healthcare infrastructure.
