Chengdu, China — In a startling medical incident that has captured national attention, a 48-year-old woman from Chengdu, Sichuan province, suffered a bone fracture simply by turning over in her sleep—a consequence doctors say is linked to her lifelong avoidance of sunlight.

According to Dr. Long Shuang, an attending physician at XinDu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the woman had meticulously shielded herself from the sun since childhood. She reportedly never wore short sleeves outdoors and took extreme measures to maintain fair skin, a beauty standard prevalent in many parts of China.

However, this extreme sun avoidance led to a critical deficiency in vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption and bone strength. Medical tests revealed the woman had developed severe osteoporosis, leaving her bones so fragile that even a minor movement in bed resulted in a fracture.

The incident has reignited debate in China about the growing trend of aggressive sun protection, especially among women. In recent years, it has become common to see people wearing wide-brimmed visors, long gloves, face masks, and UV-resistant clothing to shield themselves from sunlight. While these practices are intended to prevent tanning and skin damage, health professionals warn they may have unintended consequences.

Jiang Xiaobing, Chief Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, emphasized the risks of excessive sun shielding. “It is now common to see people fully covered from head to toe for sun protection – this is indeed unhealthy,” he cautioned in an online video. He explained that bones naturally lose mass with age, and factors such as low calcium intake, lack of sun exposure, and vitamin D deficiency can accelerate bone loss.

Dr. Jiang advised the public to ensure adequate calcium intake, exercise regularly, and limit smoking and alcohol consumption to maintain bone health. He also highlighted that menopausal women should be particularly vigilant about these risks.

This unusual case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of balanced sun exposure for overall health and the potential dangers of extreme lifestyle choices.
