Kanker, Chhattisgarh – A senior doctor in Kanker district has reportedly lost a staggering Rs 1 crore after falling victim to an elaborate investment fraud, according to local police sources. The incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community and highlights the growing menace of financial scams targeting professionals.

The Scam Unfolds

The victim, who heads the malaria department at the district hospital, was allegedly approached by a man who frequently visited him for his wife’s treatment. Over time, the accused, a resident of Sanjay Nagar, gained the doctor’s trust and claimed to be an employee of a reputed company based in Kolkata.

The scammer enticed the doctor with a lucrative investment scheme, promising to double any money invested within a year. Believing the scheme to be genuine, the doctor transferred approximately Rs 75 lakh via online transactions and handed over another Rs 25 lakh in cash to the accused.

Realization and Police Action

The deception came to light when the promised returns failed to materialize. Upon realizing he had been duped, the doctor informed his family, and his daughter promptly filed a complaint at the Kotwali police station. Authorities have since registered a case and launched a search operation to apprehend the accused, who is currently absconding.

A Growing Trend

This case is not an isolated incident. Similar scams have been reported in other states, including a recent case in Odisha where a doctor was cheated out of over Rs 6 crore through fake stock market investment promises. In that instance, police arrested three individuals from West Bengal, highlighting the widespread and organized nature of such frauds.

Authorities Urge Caution

Police officials have urged the public, especially professionals, to exercise caution and verify the credentials of any investment schemes or individuals promising unusually high returns. They recommend consulting with financial advisors and reporting any suspicious activity to authorities immediately.
