A violent incident unfolded at Amar Shaheed Umanath Singh District Hospital in Jaunpur on Friday night when a group of approximately 20-25 transgender individuals stormed the emergency ward, allegedly attacking doctors and hospital staff after being asked to file a police report before receiving treatment for an injured community member.
The altercation began around 8:45 PM after a transgender person, injured during a reported land dispute between two groups, was brought to the hospital. Hospital staff requested that the incident be registered with the police for medico-legal purposes before treatment could proceed. This request reportedly angered the accompanying group, who alleged that the injured person was denied medical attention and harassed by both hospital staff and police.
Eyewitnesses and hospital authorities stated that, in protest, the group stripped inside the emergency ward, created a disturbance, and proceeded to assault staff members, including Dr. Pawan Singh, nursing officer Ashish Singh, and ward boy Amit Singh. Several staff who attempted to intervene were also attacked, and four individuals sustained serious injuries during the 45-minute rampage. The situation caused panic among patients and their attendants, while security personnel on duty were reportedly unable to control the chaos.
Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, drawing public outrage and highlighting the vulnerability of hospital staff to such attacks. By the time police arrived with reinforcements, the group had fled the scene. Law enforcement officials have since registered an FIR against unknown individuals on charges including attempt to murder and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved.
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. K.K. Rai termed the incident “unfortunate” and confirmed that a detailed report had been submitted to the police, with a demand for strict action against the accused. In response, hospital staff have threatened to boycott work unless adequate security measures are put in place.
District Magistrate Dr. Dinesh Chandra has ordered an impartial investigation into both the hospital incident and the original assault on the transgender individual that led to the confrontation.
