Chandigarh, May 27, 2025 — The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully treating over 100 cases of pituitary tumors, including a remarkable case involving one of the tallest recorded patients, standing at an astonishing 7 feet 7 inches.

The patient, a young man suffering from acromegaly—a rare hormonal disorder caused by a functional pituitary adenoma—had been experiencing severe joint pain, vision problems, and daily challenges due to his extraordinary height. Acromegaly results from excessive secretion of growth hormone, often due to a benign tumor in the pituitary gland.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Rajesh Chhabra, Dr. Apinderpreet Singh, and Dr. Shilpi Bose from the Department of Neurosurgery, with crucial support from the neuroanaesthesia team headed by Dr. Rajeev Chauhan, performed a minimally invasive endoscopic transnasal surgery. This innovative approach allowed surgeons to remove the tumor without making any incisions on the patient’s head, minimizing recovery time and surgical risks.

Dr. Rajeev Chauhan highlighted the unique challenges posed by the patient’s size, particularly in terms of anesthesia and operating room logistics. “This was the tallest patient ever operated at PGIMER. We had to rehearse and reconfigure our entire OT setup to ensure safety and precision,” he said.

Following the surgery, the patient’s hormone levels began to normalize, and he showed significant improvement in his symptoms within weeks. The success of this case underscores PGIMER’s expertise in handling complex neuroendocrine disorders and its commitment to advancing patient care through teamwork and innovation.

Professor Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, praised the collaborative effort, stating, “The successful treatment of over 100 complex pituitary tumor cases, including this extraordinary case, is a testament to our clinical excellence and dedication to patient care.”

Dr. Rajesh Chhabra emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for pituitary tumors, which can manifest with a range of symptoms—from abnormal growth and weight gain to menstrual irregularities and vision disturbances. “Often silent in early stages, these tumors can lead to serious complications if not diagnosed and treated promptly,” he warned.

PGIMER continues to be a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of complex neuroendocrine conditions, offering advanced options such as Gamma Knife radiosurgery. The institute urges individuals experiencing abnormal growth patterns, unexplained weight changes, or hormonal symptoms to seek timely medical evaluation.
