CHANDIGARH — Nearly four years after a routine gallbladder surgery led to severe complications, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh, has ordered Mukat Hospital, Sector 34, to pay ₹25 lakh in compensation to a patient, along with ₹6.37 lakh for additional medical expenses incurred due to the mishap.

The case centers on Susheela, a resident of a city village, who approached the hospital on September 8, 2021, complaining of abdominal pain. Diagnosed with gall bladder stones, she was advised immediate removal of the organ. The surgery involved the insertion of a stent into the pancreas. However, during the procedure, the stent broke, and a fragment became lodged in the pancreatic duct—a complication that was not immediately disclosed to the patient or her family.

The patient suffered prolonged pain, repeated hospital visits, and mounting medical bills as the hospital attempted to manage the worsening situation. When the hospital acknowledged its inability to remove the broken stent or control further damage, Susheela was referred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for specialized care.

The Commission found the hospital guilty of causing mental agony and physical harassment to the complainant, citing a clear deficiency in service. In addition to the compensation, the hospital was ordered to pay the extra expenses incurred for treatment at the Gurugram facility.

This judgment highlights the increasing scrutiny of medical negligence cases in India and sends a strong message to healthcare providers regarding the importance of patient safety and transparency.
