New Delhi, May 20, 2025:
Amid a noticeable uptick in Covid-19 cases in countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, the Indian Central government convened a high-level review meeting on Monday to assess the domestic situation. The meeting, chaired by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), brought together experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) Division, Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and major Central government hospitals.

Current Situation in India

According to official data released after the meeting, India currently has 257 active Covid-19 cases as of May 19, 2025. The Union Health Ministry emphasized that the majority of these cases are mild, not associated with unusual severity or increased mortality, and most do not require hospitalization.

The ministry’s statement reassured the public, noting, “As per the preliminary information available, the cases are mostly mild, not associated with unusual severity or mortality.” The meeting concluded that the Covid-19 situation in India remains under control, with authorities maintaining a vigilant and proactive stance.

Surveillance and Preparedness

India continues to operate a robust surveillance system for respiratory viral illnesses, including Covid-19, through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR. The Union Health Ministry reiterated its commitment to closely monitor developments and respond swiftly to any changes in the situation.

Global Context: Surge in Singapore and Hong Kong

The review meeting was prompted by recent sharp increases in Covid-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong. In Singapore, cases climbed from approximately 11,100 in the last week of April to about 14,200 in the first week of May 2025. Hong Kong has also reported a significant rise in cases, with 31 Covid-related deaths recorded in the week ending May 3, 2025.

The latest global surge has been linked to the JN.1 variant, described by experts as highly infectious but not necessarily deadlier. The rapid spread of this variant has raised concerns among health officials worldwide, including in India.

Expert Opinions and Outlook

Indian health experts anticipate the possibility of a similar wave domestically, citing decreased immunity and lower antibody levels in the population as potential risk factors. However, the current data suggests that the situation remains manageable, with no signs of increased severity among the reported cases.

The Health Ministry has urged citizens to remain vigilant, follow public health guidelines, and stay updated with official advisories.
