Ministry of Ayush and ICMR Sign MoU to Advance Integrative Health Research

New Delhi, 11th May 2023 – In a significant step towards enhancing collaborative health research in India, the Ministry of Ayush and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 11th May 2023. This MoU aims to promote and develop cooperation and collaboration between the two bodies in the field of integrative health research.

The primary objectives of this MoU are to explore areas of collaboration, convergence, and synergy between the Ministry of Ayush and ICMR, as well as to strengthen research capacity. One of the priority areas identified under this agreement is the establishment of Ayush-ICMR Centres for Advanced Research in Integrative Health at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Key Features of Ayush-ICMR Centres:

  1. Integrative Health Research Ecosystem: These centres will focus on creating a dynamic and vibrant ecosystem for integrative health research by combining Ayush systems with conventional biomedicine and modern technology. The goal is to bring integrative healthcare to the public through innovations in diagnostics, prevention, health promotion, restoration, and treatment methods.
  2. Evidence Generation: The centres will generate robust evidence to mainstream integrative health approaches for diseases of national importance. This will be achieved by utilizing existing human resources, infrastructure, and available resources effectively.

In addition to the MoU, the Government published the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) for Ayushman Arogya Mandir (Ayush) and Ayush hospitals on 4th March 2024. These standards aim to bridge existing gaps in service delivery by providing a standardized framework. This framework covers physical infrastructure, quality of care, availability of human resources, capacity building, medicines, diagnostics, equipment, and governance, ensuring the highest standards of healthcare delivery across the nation.

The Minister of State (IC) for Ayush, Shri Pratap Rao Jadhav, provided this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha yesterday. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the advancement of integrative health research and the promotion of holistic healthcare in India.
