Kolkata, June 11, 2025 — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted its fourth status report on the ongoing investigation into the alleged larger conspiracy behind the R.G. Kar Medical College rape and murder tragedy to the trial court in Kolkata on Tuesday.
The case, which has drawn significant public attention, involves the rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor whose body was found in a seminar room of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on the morning of August 9 last year. The crime shocked the medical community and sparked outrage across the city.
According to details from the court, the CBI has previously named a total of 36 individuals whose statements were recorded by investigating officials. Of these, 24 were listed in the first status report and the remaining 12 in the second. The trial court judge directed the CBI to submit the latest report, along with detailed documents of the recorded statements of these individuals.
During the hearing, the judge emphasized the gravity of the incident, reminding the CBI to take the matter seriously, given that a woman doctor was raped and murdered at her workplace. However, the counsel representing the victim’s family members criticized the CBI’s approach, alleging that the contents of the latest status report were largely repetitive and lacked substantive progress.
“The contents of the fourth status report submitted today are nothing but copy-pastes of the previous status reports,” the counsel argued. They urged the CBI to conduct custodial interrogations of those who interacted with the victim immediately before the crime.
So far, only one individual—civic volunteer Sanjay Roy—has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the case. The victim’s parents have consistently maintained that Roy was not the sole perpetrator and have accused the CBI of conducting the probe in a lackadaisical manner since the beginning.
As the case continues, public scrutiny remains high, with calls for justice and a thorough investigation into the possibility of a larger conspiracy behind the tragic incident.
