Kolkata, June 25, 2025 — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday that it has no objection to the plea by the parents of the woman junior doctor, who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College in August last year, to survey the crime scene themselves.
The victim’s parents, represented by senior advocate Phiroze Edulji, had approached the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh with two appeals: a request for a fast-track hearing and permission to survey the crime scene. The court, considering that the CBI’s investigation into the larger conspiracy behind the crime is ongoing, sought the agency’s view on the matter. The CBI’s counsel stated that the investigating team had no objection to the parents’ request. Justice Ghosh subsequently directed the parents to submit a written application to the court to formalize their request.
Multiple Legal Proceedings
The case is currently being heard in three different courts:
-
Trial Court, Kolkata: Earlier this year, the trial court sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the sole convict, to life imprisonment for the rape and murder. The trial court is also examining allegations of a broader conspiracy, including evidence tampering during the initial investigation by Kolkata Police before the case was transferred to the CBI.
-
Calcutta High Court: Two separate cases are pending—one is the parents’ plea for a fresh investigation, and the other is the CBI’s appeal seeking the death penalty for the convicted individual.
-
Supreme Court: The apex court is also hearing related matters, especially concerning the handling of evidence and the possibility of a larger conspiracy.
Allegations and Concerns
The CBI has submitted four status reports to the trial court detailing the progress of its investigation into the alleged conspiracy. However, the victim’s family has accused the agency of being evasive in its reports and of conducting a lackadaisical probe. The Supreme Court has also expressed concern over serious flaws in the initial evidence collection by Kolkata Police and is closely monitoring the investigation.
Background
The case has drawn national attention, sparking protests from medical professionals and civil society. Allegations have surfaced regarding attempts to cover up the crime, with claims that the crime scene was altered before the CBI took over. The CBI’s ongoing investigation is focused on uncovering any further leads or involvement beyond the convicted individual.
