Bhopal, September 24, 2025 — In a major boost to traditional medicine in India, the Government of Madhya Pradesh announced the extension of the Dynamic Assured Career Progression (DACP) scheme to AYUSH medical professionals. This landmark decision, unveiled by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav during the 10th National Ayurveda Day celebrations held at Bhopal’s Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium, promises assured career growth and improved pay scales for nearly 2,700 AYUSH practitioners across the state, alongside significant expansions in AYUSH healthcare infrastructure and public health programs.

The DACP scheme, previously offered to government allopathic medical officers, now covers 1,453 Ayurvedic doctors, 228 homeopathic practitioners, and 85 Unani physicians serving in Madhya Pradesh. This pay progression framework guarantees time-bound promotions based on service duration and performance, independent of vacant posts, providing stability and recognition for AYUSH medical officers. The scheme aligns AYUSH professionals with their counterparts in the Health Department, affirming equal respect and financial incentives for traditional medicine practitioners.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav declared that all AYUSH medical officers will receive first-class status and senior designations, reflecting their growing importance in state healthcare delivery. This institutional recognition marks a transformative moment for AYUSH doctors, historically challenged by limited career advancement opportunities within government services.

Expanding AYUSH Healthcare Infrastructure and Services

Alongside career progression reforms, Madhya Pradesh is inaugurating 12 new AYUSH hospitals, including two 50-bed facilities in Ujjain and Khajuraho and several 10-bed hospitals across districts like Pachmarhi and Mandsaur. These expansions underscore the state’s commitment to integrate AYUSH medical systems with public health services, enhancing accessibility and patient care quality.

Furthermore, the AYUSH public health program is set to expand from its previous presence in nine colleges to active functioning across 55 districts, thereby broadening the reach of traditional healthcare solutions in rural and underserved areas. A notable innovation is the launch of the “Karunya” initiative, which aims to offer Ayurvedic care specially tailored for cancer patients, reflecting a holistic approach to chronic disease management through AYUSH modalities.

Expert Perspectives on Implications and Challenges

Dr. Anjali Menon, a public health expert not involved in the Madhya Pradesh initiative, emphasizes the significance of career progression schemes like DACP in boosting morale and retention among AYUSH professionals. She states, “Assured promotions and pay parity encourage dedicated service and attract talented graduates to AYUSH careers, which are essential given India’s pluralistic healthcare needs”.However, experts caution that while administrative reforms and infrastructure investments are promising, rigorous evaluation of AYUSH treatments’ clinical efficacy remains essential to maintain patient safety and trust. The integration of AYUSH in public health programs should be accompanied by evidence-based practices and continuous research support, ensuring balanced healthcare delivery.

Context and Broader Background

AYUSH represents India’s traditional medical systems comprising Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. As per the Ministry of AYUSH, efforts to standardize training and certification and the development of AYUSH sub-councils aim to professionalize this sector, which plays a critical role in India’s healthcare ecosystem. Historically, AYUSH practitioners have faced challenges in terms of career mobility and pay parity compared to allopathic doctors.

The DACP scheme’s extension follows long-standing demands from AYUSH professionals for equitable treatment in government service, including timely promotions and recognition aligned with their contributions. Nationally, the Ministry of AYUSH endorses DACP for its doctors, although implementation has varied across states.

Public Health Implications for Madhya Pradesh Residents

For the general public, these developments mean enhanced access to traditional medicine therapies integrated into government health services, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. The expansion of facilities and the introduction of specialized programs like Karunya indicate a growing acknowledgment of AYUSH’s potential in chronic disease support and cancer care. Patients may benefit from a wider choice of health modalities backed by state infrastructure and trained professionals.

From a healthcare system standpoint, recognizing and retaining skilled AYUSH doctors through assured career progression could mitigate workforce shortages and elevate service quality in government hospitals and clinics.

Potential Limitations and Ongoing Considerations

Despite positive momentum, challenges remain. Career progression schemes must be accompanied by continuous professional development and clinical research to validate AYUSH treatments scientifically. Moreover, ensuring equitable resource allocation and avoiding parallel systems without integration into mainstream health policy may require further policy evolution.

Skeptics underline the need for transparent data on AYUSH interventions’ outcomes, especially in public health settings. Balanced implementation respecting both traditional wisdom and modern evidence-based medicine is critical to patient safety and public trust.
