“Seven to eight hours of sleep at night is recommended for ideal cardiovascular health,” says Dr. Adedinsewo. “Fewer hours or poor-quality sleep can lead to physical symptoms that impact the rest of your body, including your heart.”
Other Key Heart-Healthy Habits
In addition to proper sleep, there are several other lifestyle factors that contribute to cardiovascular well-being:
- Maintain a healthy weight to reduce strain on the heart.
- Monitor key health indicators like blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure, ensuring they stay within a healthy range.
- Avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, which can damage blood vessels and increase heart disease risk.
- Adopt a nutrient-rich eating plan such as the Mediterranean or DASH diets, which emphasize whole foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
- Engage in regular physical activity. Dr. Adedinsewo recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
“This does not necessarily have to be split up into 30 minutes, five days a week, even though that’s an easy way that we think about it,” explains Dr. Adedinsewo. “Really, every little thing that you do adds up.”
