Kolkata, May 1, 2025 – The Calcutta High Court has called for additional clarifications from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding its ongoing probe into the harrowing rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata. The incident, which took place within the hospital premises in August last year, continues to send shockwaves through the medical and legal communities.

The matter was heard on Wednesday before a single-judge bench presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh. During the hearing, counsel representing the victim’s family raised concerns that the CBI had not adequately investigated the possibility of multiple perpetrators, despite forensic reports suggesting such a scenario. The family’s legal team argued that this critical angle had not received sufficient attention in the agency’s probe.

So far, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is the only individual identified and convicted in connection with the crime. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court. However, the CBI has challenged this verdict in the High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy. The current focus of the CBI’s investigation is on allegations of evidence tampering during the initial stages of the investigation, when Kolkata Police were handling the case before the High Court transferred it to the CBI.

Justice Ghosh instructed the victim’s parents’ counsel to submit their arguments and concerns in the form of an affidavit. After reviewing these submissions, the court directed the CBI to clarify whether it had explored the possibility of multiple offenders and whether further investigation on these lines was warranted.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 16, 2025. Justice Ghosh emphasized the need for specific facts to justify any fresh investigation, noting that the lower court’s trial had already been lengthy and resulted in a conviction.

The case continues to attract public attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety and justice within medical institutions.
