New Delhi, June 13, 2025—A shocking incident at Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College & Hospital (BSA), Rohini, has left the medical community reeling after a second-year female DNB resident doctor from the gynaecology department was brutally assaulted by attendants of a patient on June 9. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight in the hospital ward, has prompted urgent calls for justice and sweeping reforms to protect healthcare workers.

Eyewitnesses reported that the doctor was moving from the OPD to resume her ward duties when she was attacked by five female attendants of a critically ill newborn who had recently died under intensive care. The assailants allegedly dragged her by the hair, strangled her with her own stethoscope, tore her clothes, and left her with visible scratches and injuries. Shockingly, no hospital security personnel intervened during the assault.

Medical Bodies Unite in Protest

Following the incident, major medical associations—including the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), Indian Medical Association – Junior Doctors’ Network (IMA JDN), and the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at BSA—have united in demanding immediate action. Their demands include the prompt release of CCTV footage, expedited FIR registration, arrests, and chargesheets for all accused, and the introduction of robust security measures such as 24×7 trained personnel, regular police patrols, real-time CCTV surveillance, and a national helpline for healthcare workers.

FAIMA leaders visited the hospital to express solidarity with the victim and assess the situation firsthand. The association highlighted not only the severity of the attack but also systemic failures, including delayed police response, denial of access to CCTV footage, and the hospital’s failure to take action against the perpetrators. FAIMA compared the incident to the brutal rape and murder of a PG doctor at RG Kar Hospital in August 2024, underscoring a grim pattern of increasing violence against healthcare workers in the national capital.

Black Day Observed, Nationwide Protests

In response, IMA JDN declared June 11 a “Black Day,” urging doctors nationwide to wear black ribbons in protest. The association called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to launch a nationwide awareness campaign on respectful doctor-patient communication and the legal consequences of hospital violence.

RDA, BSA Medical College & Hospital, criticized the police for their handling of the case, alleging that the on-duty constable refused to make an emergency call and instead threatened the victim with a counter FIR. The police also failed to produce the accused before a magistrate within 24 hours, resulting in their release on bail. The RDA suspended OPD services in protest and called for all resident and nursing associations to unite in peaceful demonstrations until justice is served.

Condemnation and Calls for Action

The Doctors Welfare Federation (DWF) condemned the attack as a direct assault on the healthcare system and women’s safety, demanding transparent and immediate action from authorities. The federation pledged to continue peaceful public awareness campaigns with the support of national platforms, unions, and student groups.

A Pattern of Violence and Neglect

This incident is not isolated. Medical associations point to a disturbing trend of increasing assaults on healthcare workers in Delhi and across India, despite repeated assurances and policy discussions. Doctors continue to work in an environment of fear, with inadequate security and little accountability from administrative bodies.
