In a groundbreaking development, British researchers have introduced a novel artificial intelligence (AI) tool capable of predicting a person’s risk of experiencing a lethal heart rhythm with an impressive accuracy rate of 80 percent.

Ventricular arrhythmia (VA), a heart rhythm disorder originating from the ventricles, poses a severe threat due to its potential to cause rapid heartbeats, plummeting blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and sudden death if left untreated.

The AI tool, named VA-ResNet-50, was meticulously crafted by a team led by the University of Leicester in the UK. Their pioneering study, published in the European Heart Journal – Digital Health, scrutinized Holter electrocardiograms (ECGs) of 270 adults captured during their routine daily activities at home spanning from 2014 to 2022.

Among the participants, approximately 159 individuals had encountered lethal ventricular arrhythmias, typically occurring 1.6 years following the ECG examination.

VA-ResNet-50 was deployed retrospectively to analyze the “normal for patient” heart rhythms, assessing the potential for lethal arrhythmias. Impressively, the AI tool accurately predicted the risk of ventricular arrhythmia in four out of every five cases.

Professor Andre Ng, Professor of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University, emphasized the critical significance of this advancement. He noted, “Current clinical guidelines often fall short in accurately identifying individuals most susceptible to ventricular arrhythmia, leading to a significant number of fatalities from the condition.”

Crucially, Professor Ng highlighted that individuals identified as at risk by the AI tool exhibited a threefold higher likelihood of experiencing a lethal event compared to normal adults.

Utilizing artificial intelligence to assess patients’ electrocardiograms while in normal cardiac rhythm represents a groundbreaking approach to gauging risk and prescribing appropriate treatment strategies, ultimately paving the path toward saving lives, Professor Ng further asserted.

The introduction of VA-ResNet-50 underscores the transformative potential of AI in revolutionizing cardiac care, offering healthcare professionals an invaluable tool to enhance risk assessment and intervention strategies for individuals susceptible to lethal heart rhythm disturbances. This groundbreaking innovation holds promise for improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality rates associated with ventricular arrhythmias.
