A 38-year-old British man has died after reportedly traveling to Istanbul, Turkey, for a hair transplant at the Dr Cinik clinic, located in the city’s Besiktas district. According to Turkish media outlet OdaTV, the man became unexpectedly unwell as he was being prepared for surgery at the aesthetics clinic. In a statement following the incident, the clinic said the patient fell ill “for reasons that are still unknown” before the hair transplant procedure had even begun.
Despite being rushed to a hospital, the man died later that day. Reports indicate he was visiting the clinic for a follow-up after a “successful” first operation. Turkish health authorities have launched an official investigation, and the man’s body has reportedly been transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute for a comprehensive autopsy.
A spokesperson for the Dr Cinik clinic noted that all pertinent medical documentation had been submitted to the appropriate authorities and that the case was currently being reviewed by judicial bodies. The clinic emphasized that, due to the ongoing legal process and out of respect for the grieving family’s privacy, no further details would be disclosed at this stage.
The UK’s Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting the family and remains in contact with Turkish authorities. An official statement from the Foreign Office read: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities.”
The Dr Cinik clinic is recognized as a major facility, claiming over 50,000 transplants and more than 20 years of experience. Turkey has emerged as a global destination for hair restoration procedures, with the Turkish Healthcare Travel Council noting that more than one million people travel to the country annually for such treatments.
