A global research team has unveiled “Steadfast,” an advanced diagnostic kit poised to transform the early detection and monitoring of the highly pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus (AIV), commonly known as bird flu. Announced by the Diagnostics Development Hub (DxD Hub) under Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A-STAR), in collaboration with Japanese researchers, this innovation marks a milestone in combating the growing threat of avian influenza.
Faster and More Accurate Detection
Unlike conventional methods that take 2-3 days, Steadfast delivers results in approximately three hours. It effectively detects H5N1 and other H5 strains, such as H5N5 and H5N6, while also distinguishing between highly pathogenic (HPAI) and low pathogenic (LPAI) avian influenza strains—a critical factor in implementing timely and effective control measures.
“Steadfast offers a quantum leap in pandemic preparedness,” the team emphasized, highlighting its potential to reinforce biosecurity, monitor migratory bird populations, and issue timely warnings to mitigate virus transmission.
Addressing a Growing Global Threat
The H5N1 virus has caused widespread mortality among poultry and wild birds worldwide, with spillovers to mammals, including seals, cats, and cattle. In some cases, transmission to humans has been reported, raising alarms about its pandemic potential.
Dr. Onuma Manabu, Head of the Biodiversity Resource Conservation Office at Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), stressed the urgency of the situation. “The virus is mutating rapidly. Establishing effective surveillance systems and faster detection methods is essential to prevent its spread and address public anxiety,” Manabu said.
