Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora has extended heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India following the donation of 300,000 doses of measles and rubella vaccines amidst a growing health emergency in Bolivia.

Last month, Bolivia declared a National Health Emergency in response to a severe outbreak of measles, with confirmed cases rapidly rising across the country. The majority of infections were reported in the department of Santa Cruz, with additional cases in La Paz, Potosi, Beni, Chuquisaca, Oruro, and Pando. The situation triggered an urgent response from authorities, aiming to curb the spread with mass vaccination and coordinated action at local and national levels.

In what the Bolivian administration described as a “timely and vital” intervention, India dispatched a consignment of 300,000 Measles and Rubella vaccine doses, along with crucial medical supplies, to aid Bolivia’s combat against the outbreak. The gesture underlines India’s ongoing commitment to support countries of the Global South and highlights the cordial and growing relations between India and Bolivia.

President Luis Arce Catacora, in his public statements, emphasized the critical impact of this support, noting, “Our duty is clear: to protect our children and the entire population from a threat that has already raised health alerts across the continent.” Bolivia’s Health Minister Maria Renee Castro also urged parents to ensure their children are vaccinated, as the outbreak poses significant risks especially for the young and immunocompromised.

The vaccine donation comes on the heels of a recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Arce during the BRICS Summit in Brazil. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation, especially in the fields of health, critical minerals, trade, digital infrastructure, and capacity building. Modi also conveyed India’s solidarity with the Bolivian people following devastating floods earlier this year and congratulated Bolivia on its upcoming bicentennial independence celebrations.

India and Bolivia continue to strengthen their partnership through ongoing development programs, medical aid, and educational scholarships, fostering a robust framework for mutual benefit and support.
