Jehanabad, Bihar – The district administration in Jehanabad has confirmed an outbreak of Avian Influenza (H5N1), commonly known as bird flu, following the deaths of several crows on February 18. Officials have since placed the region on high alert to contain the potential spread of the virus.
According to Brajesh Kumar, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Jehanabad, laboratory tests conducted at the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) in Kolkata confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in the deceased birds.
“We have issued alerts to residents, urging them to avoid contact with sick or dead birds. Sanitisation efforts have commenced in poultry farms, and if more cases emerge, a culling process will be initiated to control the outbreak,” Kumar told IANS.
In response to the outbreak, the Animal Husbandry Department has started collecting samples from poultry farms within a three-kilometer radius. These samples will be sent to Patna for further analysis to determine whether domestic poultry has been affected.
Authorities have intensified sanitisation measures in the affected areas to prevent further spread. Fogging operations using sodium hypochlorite are underway to disinfect the surroundings.
The Secretary of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department has confirmed that the dead crows tested positive for bird flu. The sudden deaths of the birds in the police line premises have raised concerns among policemen and local residents, who now fear the virus could spread to poultry or even humans.
Officials have reassured the public that bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease that can transfer from birds to humans under certain conditions. As a precautionary measure, the government is closely monitoring poultry farms and increasing surveillance in the region.
The bird flu outbreak has caused distress among poultry farmers and residents. Authorities are taking all necessary steps to curb the spread and protect public health.
