Patna, March 9, 2025 – Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on Saturday launched a statewide free rural cancer screening programme aimed at early detection and treatment. The initiative will cover 8,387 panchayats across nearly 45,000 villages in all 38 districts of the state.

The event took place at the Prabhat Ranjan Diagnostic and Research Centre in Patna, where the minister emphasized the importance of early cancer detection and public awareness. “Many cases are diagnosed in later stages (Stage 3 or 4), which significantly reduces treatment success rates. This program will help in identifying cases early and improving survival rates,” Pandey stated.

Cancer Screening via Mobile App

A dedicated mobile application was also introduced to facilitate the screening process. Prabhat Ranjan, Director of Prabhat Ranjan Diagnostic and Research Centre, explained, “This initiative will work through a cancer screening mobile app. Villagers will be informed about the app by local village heads (Mukhiyas) and Panchayat Samiti members. The app will be downloaded on household smartphones to enable remote consultations. Live video calls with doctors will help in early identification of cancer symptoms.”

Once symptoms are detected, further medical investigations will be arranged for suspected cases. Patients will receive free treatment through the Ayushman Card and the Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Fund. Ranjan highlighted that early detection has helped many patients recover completely from cancer.

Addressing Social Stigma and Healthcare Burden

“Many cancer patients in rural areas avoid disclosing their illness due to social stigma. This app ensures privacy in consultations, encouraging individuals to seek medical assistance without fear. Early detection will also reduce the burden on Bihar’s healthcare system, benefitting both government hospitals and society at large,” Ranjan added.

This initiative could serve as a model for other states in India facing high cancer rates, offering a structured and technology-driven approach to rural healthcare.

Bihar’s First Sleep Institute Also Inaugurated

Alongside the cancer screening program, Bihar’s first Sleep Institute was inaugurated to address the growing issue of sleep disorders. Experts noted that rising stress, depression, and lifestyle changes have contributed to a surge in sleep-related illnesses.

Dr. Rupam, who launched Bihar’s first private-sector electro-physiological lab, highlighted the urgent need for specialized sleep disorder treatments. “Patients from remote areas often struggle to get a proper diagnosis. This institute will offer specialized courses and research in sleep medicine to bridge that gap.”

The combined efforts in cancer screening and sleep disorder treatment mark a significant step forward in Bihar’s healthcare system, aiming to enhance accessibility and improve early disease detection for the state’s 10 crore rural population.
