Patna, Bihar – In a significant move aimed at revolutionizing rural healthcare, Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey has announced plans to construct over 1,500 new hospital buildings across the state’s rural areas in the upcoming fiscal year. This ambitious project is part of a larger healthcare initiative backed by a substantial budget allocation of Rs 20,035.80 crore for the 2025-26 financial year.
During the assembly budget discussions, Minister Pandey unveiled the comprehensive plan, which has already been approved by a voice vote. The budget highlights the state government’s dedication to strengthening Bihar’s healthcare infrastructure and ensuring accessible medical services for its vast rural population.
“We are committed to transforming Bihar into a leader in healthcare provision,” stated Pandey. He emphasized the state’s progress in expanding medical education and hospital capacity. Currently, Bihar boasts 12 medical colleges, with plans to establish 22 additional state medical colleges and hospitals.
The expansion efforts extend beyond infrastructure development. The number of MBBS seats is slated to rise from 2,870 to 5,220, addressing the growing demand for medical professionals. Furthermore, the state aims to increase hospital beds from 18,984 to approximately 28,884. A key development includes the Patna Medical College and Hospital, which is projected to become the world’s second-largest hospital, housing 5,462 beds.
The construction of 1,500 new rural hospitals is a cornerstone of this initiative, designed to bring essential healthcare services closer to rural communities. This massive undertaking reflects the government’s focus on improving healthcare accessibility and quality across the state.
The planned budget will also fund the equipment, staffing, and maintenance of all new facilities.
