A new systematic review published in Frontiers in Immunology has highlighted a significant bidirectional association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study, published online on December 1, 2024, draws on data from 19 studies encompassing over 1.5 million participants.

The research team, led by Meijiao Wang from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in Hangzhou, examined the relationship between RA and COPD, providing a comprehensive analysis of the existing literature. The results revealed a consistent link between these two chronic conditions, with each increasing the risk of developing the other.

The meta-analysis found that individuals with RA had a 41% higher risk of developing COPD, with an odds ratio of 1.41. This association was observed across various subgroups, including both men and women, seropositive and seronegative RA, and in both cohort and case-control studies. Conversely, those with COPD were found to have a 36% increased risk of developing RA (odds ratio, 1.36). This was especially true among women, those with seropositive RA, and participants in cohort studies.

Although the risk for bias in the studies ranged from low to moderate, the evidence was generally rated as low or very low. Despite these limitations, the findings suggest that the two conditions are more closely linked than previously understood.

“This meta-analysis indicates a significant bidirectional association between RA and COPD across the included studies,” the authors noted. “Early detection of both conditions may be vital for initiating effective treatments and improving long-term outcomes.”

Given the overlapping symptoms and complications of both diseases, the authors emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Detecting either condition early could lead to more effective management, potentially improving quality of life and preventing further deterioration.

This study sheds new light on the interconnectedness of RA and COPD, suggesting that managing one condition may help mitigate the risks associated with the other.
